Fidel Castro vs CIA

The US spent decades, trying to kill Fidel Castro, and many assume that we still don't have access to the entire story. globinfo freexchange The US spent years pushing for regime change in Cuba, most notably in the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion . And the US focused on Castro specifically. According to Fabian Escalante, the former head of the Cuban Secret Service, there were over 600 attempts to assassinate Castro. These weren't the usual bullet or plane crash scenarios, and the CIA had some unusual help. The first documented plans to assassinate Fidel Castro, date back to 1960. Escalante claims that every US president, from Eisenhower to Clinton, has at some point attempted to kill Castro. While it's impossible to verify the specifics of Escalante's claims, it is clear that numerous plots existed. It's also clear that many of the plans never moved past the drawing board. These plans range from the plausible, such as having Castr

Internet Archive's small victory over FBI

A decade ago, the FBI sent Brewster Kahle, founder of the Internet Archive, a now-infamous type of subpoena known as a National Security Letter, demanding the name, address and activity record of a registered Internet Archive user. The letter came with an everlasting gag order, barring Kahle from discussing the order with anyone but his attorney — not even his wife could know. But Kahle did eventually talk about it, calling the order “horrendous,” after challenging its constitutionality in a joint legal effort with the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the American Civil Liberties Union. As a result of their fight, the FBI folded, rescinding the NSL and unsealing associated court records rather than risk a ruling that their surveillance orders were illegal. “This is an unqualified success that will help other recipients understand that you can push back on these,” Kahle told reporters once the gag order was lifted. The bureau continued to issue tens of thousa

Russia invents method of producing nuclear fuel

Scientists at the Far Eastern Federal University have invented a new method of producing nuclear fuel using electric current, said the university Friday. Main advantages of the new technology are low cost, quick manufacturing process, and improvement of product quality. Fuel can be produced even from uranium dioxide powder, which is not suitable for common technology, the press service said. " The key idea of our method is heating with electric current. It flows through a mould that already has some powder on it. In such conditions uranium oxide fuel experiences the powerful pulsed discharge and mechanical pressure simultaneously, " said Ivan Tananaev, head of the department of nuclear technologies at the school of natural sciences.
