neoliberal
government attack in public universities
Early this
afternoon, the members of the Senate of the University of Athens offered their resignations to the president Th. Pelegrinis.
This
unprecedented decision is interpreted as a move to force the
Government find a solution for the University's administrative
employees who face the threat of layoff.
Mr.
Pelegrinis stated that the members of the academic community refuse
to work under police supervision and blamed the Ministry of Education
for actions that led to a dead end.
The
representative of the Senate Valsamis Valsamakis stated that "We
asked from Mr. Pelegrinis to use our resignations at will. Tomorrow
there will be no courses to the University of Athens, because we
refuse to conduct courses with police presence".
"...we
asked to meet with the Prime Minister immediately to give a solution
to the problem of the Universities and we, of course, do not accept
the layoffs of the administrative employees. They are necessary for
the University's function".
