EBU stops its support to the Hellenic Public Broadcaster: Another victory for the neoliberal dictatorship
by system
failure
European
Broadcasting Union (EBU) through a simple announcement in their
website,
(http://www3.ebu.ch/cms/en/sites/ebu/contents/news/2013/08/ert-streaming-to-end-as-interim.html),
decided to stop the transmission of the Hellenic Public Broadcaster
(ERT), from today 21st August. EBU's decision is another defeat
for the democracy, not only in Greece, but in Europe also since this
decision certifies the anti-democratic action of the Greek government
to close ERT through a simple announcement resembling a fascist
regime on June 11.
Therefore,
EBU opens the door for other European governments to close public
broadcasters in Europe, despite the fact that reacted strongly from
the beginning against Greek government's decision and fully supported
workers in ERT in order to continue broadcasting.
EBU
justifies its decision on the basis of some information according to
which the DT channel, which replaced the real Greek public TV, will
start providing news services.
This is
something which eventually explains the petition withdraw from the
avaaz.org website, a petition to the Greek prime minister, created
recently by the EBU
(http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/EBU_Petition_Get_ERT_back_on_air/),
in order for the Greek public TV to continue broadcasting with
current staff and status.
In the short
description of this already "dead" initiative, under the
title "Why this is important", one can read among other
things that "... any far-reaching changes to the public media
system should only be decided after an open and inclusive democratic
debate in Parliament - and not through a simple agreement between two
government ministers."
Despite all
these, EBU, through its last announcement and its intention to stop
supporting the real Greek public TV, at the same time, announces its
willing to help the Greek government with the new broadcaster which
will replace ERT.
Thus,
neoliberal dictatorship wins another battle in at least three
significant fronts:
First,
pushes the social automatism to the limits, a basic tool with which
prevails because creates conflict between ERT workers who will take a
short-contract job in the government's new TV channel against those
who will loose their jobs for good.
Second, the
closing or even self-prohibition of public organizations through
brief, anti-democratic procedures, in Greece and Europe, is certified
by other European public organizations like EBU.
Third,
European institutions for the support of labor rights will be
overridden since workers are pushed to their new jobs with short-term
contracts, under fully "flexible" conditions, which lead
faster to the new labor middle ages, not only in private sector,
but also in public sector eventually.
Additionally,
public broadcaster will be fully controlled by any government.
Therefore, it will become the tool of the ultimate propaganda and
misinformation, or, will be closed permanently since the neoliberal
dictatorship puppets will downgrade it at the maximum level.
We must note
that, the Press Project website, announced that intent to continue
the real Greek public broadcaster transmission with its own means,
despite EBU's decision:
